About the Pilot Project

LSC's Office of Data Governance & Analysis (ODGA) collects publicly available civil court records and is exploring how these under-utilized data can help legal services providers and court systems to better understand trends in filings, representation, and geographic or demographic disparities. With support from the Pew Charitable Trusts, ODGA partnered with stakeholders in three states to explore using court data to monitor legal needs, costs, and representation. Eviction filings in the Tampa, FL area

In collaboration with Bay Area Legal Services, we developed an interactive tool to support outreach and planning by visualizing eviction filing hotspots and trends in filings, representation rates, and default judgments.

Eviction filings in the Memphis, TN area

In collaboration with Memphis Area Legal Services, we developed an interactive tool to visualize trends in judgment rates, outstanding court costs, and filings by landlord size, as well as eviction filing hotspots.

Visualizing South Carolina's Justice Gap

In collaboration with the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission, and in support of the statewide Justice Gap study, we developed a tool to present data on poverty, attorney access, and representation in court, both geographically and by problem area.
