Milestones in LSC's History
Delve into the history of the Legal Services Corporation as we celebrate 50 years of Protecting the Promise. From its inception to the present day, LSC has fought for the right to accessible civil legal aid.
We intend the commemoration of LSC’s anniversary to be a wake-up call to help educate the public about and protect the promise of access to justice for those facing these civil issues.
Fifty years ago, our government made a promise to protect the rights of all Americans by enacting legislation that created the Legal Services Corporation. LSC was entrusted with the mission of providing “equal access to the system of justice in our nation” and “high quality legal assistance to those who would be otherwise unable to afford adequate legal counsel.” For a half-century, LSC has worked to do just that, helping millions of low-income Americans access the resources they need to protect their safety and security. This timeline highlights pivotal moments in LSC's history, from changes in congressional support to new initiatives seeking to tackle access-to-justice barriers.
