"Marcia K. Cypen dedicated her entire career to advancing access to justice, serving for nearly 35 years as a pivotal figure at Legal Services of Greater Miami. Joining as a staff attorney in 1976, she swiftly rose through the ranks, becoming the executive director in 1983, a position she held until her retirement in 2017.
In the 1970s, Legal Services of Greater Miami was staffed by passionate attorneys fighting for fundamental rights. Marcia's legal brilliance and compassion for her clients made her a leader in health advocacy and public benefits. She tirelessly worked in federal and state courts to expand laws protecting the most vulnerable in Miami-Dade.
Recognizing the organization's need for improved resources and structure, Marcia transitioned to leadership. Under her guidance, Legal Services of Greater Miami evolved into a highly respected law firm representing thousands of low-income families. Marcia spearheaded innovative projects including a Community Economic Development unit, an AIDS Legal Advocacy Project, a Disaster Unit and a Homeless Legal Advocacy unit, addressing pressing societal issues.
Marcia's blend of compassion and legal expertise, coupled with her astute business sense, led to significant achievements. Legal Services purchased its office building, later establishing the ""Chesterfield Smith Center for Equal Justice."" In 2014, a new building was acquired, and the Legal Services of Greater Miami Foundation was founded, ensuring long-term stability for the program despite funding uncertainties.
Throughout her tenure, Marcia quietly nurtured Legal Services of Greater Miami, eschewing personal accolades for the greater good. Her unwavering commitment to access to justice has profoundly impacted the community, leaving a lasting legacy of equality and fairness.
